Do Come In Excuse The Mess (MP3)

It started out with the idea of doing some tracks with Shakespeare Alabama producer Chris Kimsey to find out how it might feel together in the studio after 21 years. Four of the tracks here went down with Chris overseeing the takes which started the ball rolling. From there we recorded another six in a room designed to the same specifications as the studio where the great Tamla Mowtown classics were recorded in the Detroit of the sixties. This however was south London in the 21st century and the band wasn’t the Supremes or the Temptations it was Diesel Park West! .Three little words that have become engrained in some peoples lives far outstripping all the rules of logic or even, occasionally, sanity. If being a successful band with all the trimmings and rewards that go with it is nevertheless an emotionally and physically hard job then DPW can testify for the almost opposite principle that staying together as a unit with virtually no media support hardly any proper money and only a small though very well informed following is equally as tough and lets face it in reality much more so. So why keep doing it why bother to make another album? It’s a dirty job but someones got to do it. Look at what is not going on out there and it becomes obvious that what the Diesels do is a vital part of keeping faith with some core rock n roll values which may by now be under serious attack from the forces of lacklustre yet ferocious opportunity crazies! Songs have become almost like a living currency within the culture of today and as such its important for a bit of class now and again. This is what we try to deliver every time we put something out , even if its fallen short of its own objective on occasion, its what has always been the drive behind the band to present something classy whilst still retaining our abrasive and questioning soul. If rock n roll had been around during the time of the Puritans then we would probably be a band they would allow to continue performing. So here is album number eight “Do Come In Excuse The Mess .” Good title innit. Whenever we come off stage immediately after a performance quite often the first thing anybody might say is “how did you get on”? which is a very east midlands working class thing to say in that situation so let us know how you get on with this new record which was meant for you after all!

What Kept You (MP3)

These tracks were all mostly recorded between 94 and 96  the couple of years between Freakgene and the Loyal Serpent. They might be described as a missing link but in reality they are merely part of the broader picture. Worth checking out if only for the dna aspect. The band never stopped recording even after being shown the door by EMI and that’s why the indie albums exist. In the end who cares which label they are on. Included here are great lost singles such as Face Of Years,  5am Breakdown and the Willson masterpiece Long Hair and the Cities of Europe which was actually the last recording whilst still signed to Food but utterly rejected by the then Blur obsessed label. Also included are Genius Alert and The Luckiest Man In London both rare John Butler-Ian Michie collaborations and glimpses into hitherto uncharted territory. The writing at this time was reflecting the experiences of the previous few years in terms of shared experience and demonstrates clearly what could have been available to the wider media had the band retained major label support.

You, You, You & You EP (MP3)

Back in the day the EP format was every bit as worthwhile as that of the album. The EP was possibly more important in the grand sweep of the sixties than the album at least in the first half of the decade. This is a brand new draft of Diesels songs which we hope you can both enjoy and anticipate.

The Loyal Serpent (MP3)

After the perceived commercial failure of Dpw in 1992 with the last throw of the major label dice being an unnecessary decision to release a two stage single of cover versions, the band were sadly divorced from Emi. Sad not least because the label didn’t actually want this but were compelled to stop investing due to having recently aquired Bransons Virgin label for many millions and so Dpw were let go. A lot of bands would have called it a day at this horrible turn of events but Diesel Park West continued to record releasing indie albums the Corporate Waltz in 93 followed by Freakgene in 95. It was only when Freakgene was heard by the then MD at Emi the wheel began to turn full circle. Declaring Butler a genius for writing this album it was decided that Emi would indeed resign him as a solo artist for whatever he did next. The Loyal Serpent was released in 97 to universal praise. The album proved beyond doubt that although Dpw had failed in the crucial area of having a radio hit single the bands writer was a major force. The Loyal Serpent is like a sonic route map from North to South. Starting with the shimmering pop of Wings Of The Morning through to the deep dark soul search of Leave Me With The Sinners this solo debut proves those who had always claimed Butler to be a major creative force were right.

Hang Johnson (MP3)

“You should never go back ” seems a familiar mantra but music has a way of rising above rules even cosmic ones. The original DPW 4 piece line up which had recorded the towering debut in 1988 and promoted it the following year did reconvene for just under a couple of years from summer 97 to spring 99. In reality this meant playing together again with the drumming firework known as Moth Smith. Originally back just for a one off home town gig the Flawed Four then decided to do more shows and inevitably record some songs together before the cracks began to once more appear. Thankfully a document of this short-lived era is available here. The title Hang Johnson comes from graffiti which was painted onto a wall near toLeicester railway station by some disgruntled student in 1968 referring to LBJ. It wasn’t removed until 2011! How very DPW.

John Butler & Rick Willson Live At The London Astoria 2002 (MP3)

Rick Willson and John Butler often performed some pretty outstanding acoustic shows between 1994 and 2008. This demonstrates the locked in empathy and fabulous taste the pair had performing together. This is rock n roll acoustic in the spirit of The Everleys The Springfield and of course Moby Grape. A live Sunday evening at Londons now vanished Astoria theatre circa 2002 presented by Bob Harris and capturing a wonderful moment in time where they play a selection of straight from the heart covers

Ringstead (MP3)

Recorded by producer Lee Russell in the summer of 2005 this may really be considered a third solo Butler album. Previously thought to be lost in time and acrimony these recordings demonstrate clearly what could be achieved with a single minded producer and some great songs. Dont expect Shakespeare Alabama or quite honestly anything sounding like DPW because what we have here is a fascinating collection of tunes laid down in rural Northamptonshire with the intention of bringing out a different aspect of Johns performance and writing. Apparently Russell was quite dictatorial in his approach and would even be reluctant to let the singer take copies away which eventually led to friendly fallout. However these recently unearthed tunes offer witness to the fact that something quite unique was indeed going on in Ringstead and prove the enterprise was well worth the effort and the subsequent wait to hear it.

Diesels Play Byrds (mp3)

This album of over twenty tracks shows what can be achieved with consummate musicianship in a very short period of time. Why record songs already etched into history by a seminal and hugely important band from the sixties? Well DPW have always openly subscribed to American west coast rock n roll as an influence so what better to demonstrate this than the music of the original Byrds. These tracks were recorded over two days and feature Rick Willsons ringing 12 string Rickenbacker throughout as well as the extra voice of Adam Freakgene Ellis to really deliver on that eternal sound. Done out of a sense of fun originally but you may want to hear their take on songs such as Change Is Now, Why and of course Eight Miles High.Fascinating!.

BBC Radio 1 Sessions ’87 – ’91 (MP3)

Between August 1987 and February 1992 Diesel Park West recorded four nightime sessions for the BBC radio one. Gathered together here for the first time is the entire DPW session output ranging from 1987 to 2007. BBC recordings at their Maida Vale studios are often done in an unfeasibly short amount of time yet nearly always sound great sometimes even beating the official released versions. That’s probably down to a deadline which has to be met, no time for prima donna indulgences, and the experience of the Beeb engineers.

Hope you find these tracks as enjoyable to listen to as the band did recording them. There is even included here a track never heard anywhere before, Too Much Life, which shows the band in the full verve and confidence of the time.
